Data Migration

Transforming from a legacy system to a modern software application requires data migration. Very seldom it is just a simple extract, transform and load. Thorough analysis of existing and new data structures and content is paramount. Data security is an important factor and needs to be considered from the beginning.

Mitigating the risk in complex environments means often to develop data migration routines that run on a regular basis and include comparison to ensure data quality. In most cases an intermediate platform for analysis, cleansing, transformation, enrichment and comparison is needed.

Often data structures are undocumented, the supplier is no longer in business or is not willing to supply the information and the data context is obscured by disorganized data layouts. Migrating data from older platforms like AS/400 can pose additional challenges. If the migration involves accounting data, it can mean that there are additional measures to be taken in order to fulfil legal and regulatory requirements.

Whether it is for a single-cycle or a multi-cycle migration; we not only have extensive technical knowledge with various data formats and legacy systems, we also have the skills to design and implement the necessary data migration routines.

From experience in large projects we generally use an SQL Server®-Database paired with Microsoft SSIS and SSRS as an intermediate platform. This allows to implement process chains with encapsulated data manipulation via SQL and C#-methods as well as automated reporting.
